Checklist: Welcome to VCU & First Term Prep

Below is a suggested checklist of resources to assist you in familiarizing yourself with VCU, the School of Social Work, and preparation for classes.

  • Navigate through HR’s New Employees site to orient yourself to the essentials of VCU policies, information systems, benefits, and culture.
  • See the rest of this site and socialwork.vcu.edu to familiarize yourself with the School of Social Work (SSW) and the B.S.W. Program.
  • Verify your teaching assignment(s) with the B.S.W. Program Coordinator.
    • They will email you the details of your course section(s) to confirm.
  • Sign your contract to make your course(s) official.
    • HR will email your contract for a digital signature via Docusign.
  • Connect with your course lead.

  • Prepare your course syllabus:
    1. Receive a copy of the primary syllabus template for your course from your course lead or the B.S.W. Program Coordinator.
    2. Review the requirements for all VCU syllabi.
    3. Adjust your copy of the syllabus template with your teaching plans. **Remember to keep all requirements, and please do not make any changes to the Key Assessment Assignment. Read more here about the Key Assessment Assignments and how they fit into our program evaluation process.
    4. Once complete, send a copy of your course syllabus to the B.S.W. Program Coordinator at the program email, bsw@vcu.edu.
  • Claim your eID and your V#, your VCU login credentials. You will receive these via email after HR and IT have processed your hiring.
  • Log into your vcu.edu Gmail account. See the FAQ for instructions to access.
  • Log into your eServices account at eservices@vcu.edu
    • This is where you will submit your final grades.
  • Log into your Canvas account at canvas.vcu.edu.
    • This Learning Management System (LMS) is one of your primary teaching tools. You will use Canvas to disseminate course content to your students, post and collect assignments and grades, and make announcements to your class when needed.
